What are Mouth Guards?

A mouth guard is an essential piece of equipment for athletes who participate in contact sports and other physical activities. Mouth guards are protective appliances worn over your teeth to absorb the impact of blows to the face, hard falls, contact between players, and other sports-related accidents. If you have braces, crowns, bridges or other dental repairs, our dental team recommends a mouth guard to protect them.

What are the Benefits of Mouth Guards?

Mouth guards can protect your teeth, gums, and other soft tissues of your mouth from sports-related trauma and accidents. Common sports-related injuries include broken teeth, knocked out teeth, broken tooth roots, and lacerations of the lips, gums, cheeks or tongue. In some cases, mouth guards have been shown to help reduce the risk of more severe injuries, such as concussions or a broken jawbone.

Mouth guards are required equipment in contact sports such as boxing, ice hockey, field hockey, football and lacrosse. However, doctors and dentists recommend the use of mouth guards in a variety of sports and physical activities that could result in a hard fall or blow to the face. Mouth guards are also recommended for children and student athletes.

Do I Need a Custom-Fitted Mouth Guard?

An effective mouth guard should be durable, tear-resistant, and well-fitted as to avoid slipping during use. A poorly fitted mouth guard can impede your breathing or speech. While there are many commercially available mouth guards on the market, our dental team recommends a custom-fitted mouth guard. Made to meet your unique needs, our mouth guards offer optimal fit, comfort and performance. Our team can create your mouth guard in two to three visits to our Overland Park office, allowing you to hit the field or the rink with confidence.

What are Night Guards?

Our dental recommends night guards for patients who suffer from nighttime bruxism, or clenching or grinding the teeth during sleep. Over time, bruxism can lead to pain and lasting damage to your teeth. Symptoms of nighttime bruxism include headache, jaw, neck or face pain, chipped teeth, worn teeth, increased tooth sensitivity, or damage to the inside of the cheeks. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, our dentist may recommend a night guard. A custom-made night guard is worn over your teeth to reduce the contact between them during sleep, reducing the effects of bruxism and saving your teeth from further damage.

I have been going to Dr. Haake for a really long time and have always had a really good experience. I always get really great dental hygienists and love that you can pick a Pandora station before they start. I will continue to refer and will be taking my little boys to see Dr. Haake once they are of age to go!

Excellent experience from walking in the door to leaving. I had a 10:50 appointment and at 10:50 I was in the chair. The staff and dentist do their best to make your visit a positive experience. Both Dr. Haake and Dr. Boydston made my 2 visits there a great experience.
